For Teachers

Everything you need to help your students build stronger, faster, and more lasting math skills.

1. Why Math Fact Fluency Matters in the Classroom

When basic facts are slow or inaccurate, students use valuable mental effort on arithmetic instead of the new procedure being taught. Strong fact recall helps students work more accurately and efficiently on complex operations such as long division, multi-digit multiplication, and solving algebraic equations where accurate operations with integers are essential.

2. Protecting Valuable Instructional Time

Class time should be spent teaching the mathematics appropriate for that grade—not repeatedly stopping to reteach basic arithmetic facts students were expected to master years earlier. PracticeMath.Fun allows students to strengthen those gaps independently through targeted Practice and Test sessions, freeing teachers to focus instructional time on the new concepts and procedures their class needs to learn.

3. Which Students Need PracticeMath.Fun Most?

Students who count on their fingers, skip-count to multiply, hesitate on basic facts, or frequently make simple arithmetic errors are strong candidates for targeted practice. The most efficient approach is to test all students at the beginning of the school year and assign one Practice and one Test each day to those who do not score 100%. Once mastery is reached, a weekly Practice and Test assignment, and then eventually just a monthly Test assignment is sufficient for all students to keep those facts secure. Identifying and correcting these gaps early prevents them from interfering with the increasingly complex mathematics students are expected to learn.

Multi-digit multiplication and long division can only be performed accurately when the underlying addition, subtraction, and single-digit multiplication facts are accurate. Likewise, an algebraic equation can only be solved accurately when the required operations with integers are mastered.

4. How to Use PracticeMath.Fun With Your Class

PracticeMath.Fun can be used for warm-ups, independent work, intervention, homework, or short skill-building sessions. Short, consistent practice is more effective than occasional long sessions. Daily completion of one Practice and one Test is appropriate while a skill is being mastered or answer speed is being improved, followed by weekly review once accuracy and speed are secure, and eventually monthly review to help maintain long-term recall.

5. How to Read and Use Your Teacher Dashboard

The Teacher Dashboard shows practice completion, test results, pauses, speed chosen for answer and progress over time. Use this information to identify weak skills, determine who needs additional practice, and see which students are ready to move forward.

6. How to Group Students by Need

PracticeMath.Fun makes it easy to see which students need accuracy practice, which are ready to work on recall speed, and which have reached mastery and only need periodic review. Use Test results, editable columns, and sorting features in the Teacher Dashboard to assign Practice and Test sessions according to each student's current level rather than giving the entire class the same work.

7. What Does Mastery Mean—and When Should a Student Move On?

Mastery means more than answering correctly once. A student should recall facts accurately, consistently, and with little hesitation before moving on. A 100% test score, completed without pauses and with an average response time of around 5 seconds, is a strong indication that mastery has been achieved. Once accuracy is secure, continued practice can strengthen recall speed and long-term retention.

8. Accuracy Before Speed

Speed should never come at the expense of accuracy. Students should first learn to recall the correct answer consistently at the maximum allowed response time of 10 seconds. Once that foundation is secure, encourage them to challenge themselves to continue scoring 100% at progressively shorter response times. A weekly Practice and Test session, followed eventually by a monthly Test session, provides the repeated recall needed to make answers faster, easier, and increasingly automatic.

9. Helping Students Who Are Embarrassed About Basic Facts

Older students may feel self-conscious about struggling with skills they believe they should already know. Practicing on PracticeMath.Fun keeps the work private, matter-of-fact, and focused on improvement. As core facts become faster, more accurate, and increasingly automatic, students can regain confidence in skills they may have felt they should have mastered long ago.

10. How to Communicate Progress to Parents

At PracticeMath.Fun, we believe the student, teacher, and parent form the three legs of a tripod on which academic success can be securely built. When all three work together, the student has the strongest possible foundation for success.

That is why PracticeMath.Fun provides not only Teacher and Child Dashboards, but a Parent Dashboard as well. Parents can see the progress and history of each Practice and Test, including accuracy, recall speed, consistency, and mastery over time. Clear, detailed progress data keeps parents informed and makes it easier for them to support practice at home.
